Illegal logging

Forests in Jordan make up less than 1 per cent of the country’s total area of 89,342 sq. km, placing the Kingdom among the poorest countries in the world in terms of forest cover. Despite the previously mentioned fact, forests in Jordan are facing some challenges, such as illegal logging.

Unfortunately, Ajloun Governorate, 70 kilometres northwest of Amman, is a target for illegal loggers because it is rich with forest trees, which cover the majority of its terrain.

During the past years, the Rangers registered hundreds of cases of illegal logging despite the imposed punitive measures, according to Environment Ministry’s figures.

In my opinion, this illegal behaviour reflects the irresponsibility of person towards society and himself alike.

On the other hand, the government has made a set of procedures to maintain the green cover of the Kingdom. Last year, the Agriculture Ministry has exempted imported wood from customs duties in a bid to reduce deforestation .

This decision was meant to make illegal logging a “useless” endeavour as prices would be much lower, with a better quality of local wood.

Finally, we hope not to see Red Oaks of our forests for sale anymore. This needs more cooperation between the society and the government.

It is the responsibility of all of us to protect the green cover of our country.
